What is Project Ara?
It all starts with an endoskeleton, or “endo,” the structural frame and data backbone of the device. The user can populate the endo with “modules,” the building blocks that make up the vast majority of the phone’s functionality and features. The modules can be easily and safely inserted and removed at any time, even while the device is powered on. The modules also have user-replaceable covers or “shells,” which provide a creative canvas for users to make their phone look exactly as they wish. Ultimately, customers will be able to buy a complete Ara phone, configure one from scratch, or buy additional modules through the Ara Module Marketplace.
Project Ara lives in Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. For more about ATAP and Project Ara,
Oh wait don't get confused thinking that this will be a new Nexus phone ,Project Ara devices will run the Android operating system, however, today, the program is still very much a development effort and is not an official Android or Nexus product.
What Makes Project ARA different from other mobile devices .?
With a modular platform, We can
pick the camera we want for our phone rather than picking our phone
for the camera. We could have a sensor to test if water is clean. We
could have a battery that lasts for days. A really awesome speaker. A
gamer phone. Or it could even be Our car key. The possibilities are
limitless.
We can upgrade different parts of our phone when we
need too. Replace a broken display. Save up for a high-end camera. Share
a module with Our family, or swap one with Our friends. Now we don’t
have to throw our phone away every few years. What else… Want your cat on your phone? Get a custom shell. Cat’s got kittens? No problem, add those images too. Are you a sports nut? Get your favorite team’s logo on your phone.
In short, Ara lets you make thoughtful choices and tell your story through your device.
Why is it called Project A R A ..!!
As they have stated the answer in their Official Website , Its as follows"As it turns out, our lead mechanical designer is named Ara. And we like him. And we also like his name. So we named the phone Ara. We hope you like it too."
Hold there a minute , i laughed there too .:P XD .
Project Goals
Google says the device is designed to be utilized by "6 billion people"; including 1 billion current smartphone users, 5 billion feature phone users, and 1 billion future user not currently connected.Google intends to sell a starter kit where the bill of materials is US$50 and includes a frame, display, battery, low-end CPU and WiFi.Google wants Project Ara to lower the entry barrier for phone hardware manufacturers so there could be "hundreds of thousands of developers" instead of the current handful of big manufacturers. This would be similar to how the Google Play Store is structured. Lowering the barrier for entry allows many more people to develop modules. Anyone will be able to build a module without requiring a license or paying a fee.
